Hüllen

The dancer’s body is wrapped in a minimalist costume. Her movements evoke abstract shapes and female characters from different cultures and different eras.. The central topic of the piece is metamorphosis: the back and forth between what is inside and outside, between being and becoming. The change of characters is subtle and barely noticeable; it is as if they were constantly present, even when they are no longer visible.

Hüllen is the first choreography of my Embryo project, which focuses on the human embryo and prenatal life and questions identity, the propagation of life and coming into existence. I developed Hüllen (casings) in cooperation with the costume designer Ele Bleffert and with the following question as our point of departure: To what extend do fluids and movement flow on the one hand and membranes – i.e. resistance – on the other hand influence the origin of form? The feminine focus of the piece felt surprising and obvious at the same time and happened as a natural result of the choreographic process.
