Each line in this song is a metaphor on death. For me, it is a positive song, defining death as a new beginning. The end of one phase and the start of a new one.

I was very intrigued by the notion of the mockingbird (deutsch: spottdrossel). This bird only exists in the America. They do not have their own song, but they copy (sample) other birds` songs and sounds around them. In north American literature it often comes up as a metaphor.

'Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy.

They don't eat up peoples gardens, don't nest in corncribs,

they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us.

That's why it's a sin to kill a mocingbird.'

or in the lullaby 'Hush little baby...don´t say a word, papa´s gonna buy you a mockingbird'.
